Water makes up 75% of all muscle tissue and about 10% of fatty tissue, but it also acts within each cell to transport nutrients and dispel waste. Water is ESSENTIAL. It is recommended for women to consume 2.7 Litres (about 12 cups) and 3.7 Litres (about 15 cups) for men per day. Even more is required for physically active individuals.

If you are an active individual you should be consuming 17 to 20 ounces of water two hours before the start of exercise. During exercise you should be drinking 7 to 10 ounces of fluid every 10-20 minutes of your workout. In regards to post workout hydration you should drink 16 to 24 ounces of fluid for every pound of body weight lost from your workout.

The benefits of drinking the required amount of water your body needs in a day has endless benefits.

The following points are just some of the benefits of staying hydrated:

▪Drinking the required amount of water your body needs promotes Weight Loss. It does so by replacing high calorie drinks, it is an appetite suppressant, and there is no fat, no carbs, no calories, no sugar in water.

▪Drinking enough water will boost your energy! Being dehydrated makes us feel tired and drained, you will notice drops in your energy throughout the day. Remember, if you are thirsty you are already dehydrated. If you let your body become dehydrated this will lead to fatigue, muscle weakness, dizziness, and more.

▪ Staying properly hydrated will cures Headaches! Do you suffer from headaches frequently? If you aren’t drinking enough water throughout the day, this is often the reason why. One of the most common reasons for a headache is actually a lack of water so think about if this is affecting you. Once your body is in a dehydrated state you will become dizzy, and most likely get a headache.

You can meet your body’s water requirements in various ways throughout your day. This can include and is not limited to; smoothies, fruits/veggies, tea, soups, some juices, but always remember to get the majority of it from drinking regular water. If you don’t like the taste of regular water and for some added nutrients try detox waters, or adding lemon or amino’s to your water if you are an active individual. If you are someone who drinks lots of soda or other high calorie drinks, try carrying a water bottle around with you to decrease your craving for one. Or drink your daily water requirement and then have your soda, it’s all about balance in life!

Without enough water we are at risk of dehydration which causes muscle cramps, lack of energy and heat exhaustion or heat stoke when exercising. As well we risk all of the above factors such as headaches, digestive issues, fatigue, mood swings, etc.

To make healthy hydration a habit try the following tips:

-Drink a glass of water with each meal
-Carry a water bottle with you everywhere
-Keep water with you at work always
-When you feel like you need a snack, try a glass of water first
-Substitute with water for all your daily not so healthy drinks such as; soda, extra coffee, alcohol, or other high calorie drinks
-Track the amount of water you drink in a day
