One of the first questions I get asked when people start on their health journey is: “What can I eat?”

Is dairy OK?  Can I have bread or potatoes? Is pork okay? I know it’s high in fat.

Generally speaking, if you know where the food came from, you can eat it and still lose body fat.  That would include any produce (fruits and vegetables). Any meat sources, tofu, tempeh, and low-fat dairy.

You can download a copy for yourself and use it to create your meals: pick 1 protein, 1 carb, and 1 fat; then add as many non-starchy vegetables as you want too. Blam – an awesome meal.

Packaged foods are tricky, and usually, I recommend not eating very much because of the chemical content. If the food has a shelf-life longer than your own, you probably shouldn’t be eating it. Just sayin’!

But it’s inevitable that some packaged foods make their way into your diet. When you need to eat food from a box, jar or can, check the ingredient list.

If the ingredient list is less than 7 and if you recognize and can draw all of the ingredients – you’re good to go. Citric Acid is OK by the way.

The other subject we should talk about is food intolerances. If you are intolerant to a specific food you shouldn’t eat it. It will cause leaky gut, leading to inflammation. It’s very difficult to lose fat if you’re inflamed.  It sucks, but we often crave the foods we’re intolerant too.

How do you know if you’re inflamed?  Common symptoms include: bloating, gas, diarrhea and/or constipation, headaches, ache or insomnia.

You can test for intolerances,  but common foods that cause these issues are nuts, dairy, shellfish, and gluten. The allergic response may develop as you age.
