Nutrition The Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting has become the most used diet plan to help people lose weight. Do a quick google search on intermittent fasting and almost two million searches on the topic show up. People are talking about it.

The Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is a little more than just skipping breakfast. It is planning your caloric intake to happen on a certain schedule of the day. For example, instead of eating breakfast early in the morning, start your meals at 12 pm and eat all of your needed calories between 12- 8 pm. Once 8 pm arrives, you are done eating for the day and you wait until noon the next day. That means you are fasting for 16 hours a day.

The benefits of intermittent fasting include:

·         Increased insulin and leptin sensitivity, which will help control blood sugar levels

·         Increase your hunger hormone ghrelin which reduces overeating

·         Makes your body become more efficient at burning fat for fuel

·         Decreases triglyceride levels

·         Increases growth hormone production

I won’t lie, if you aren’t used to not eating for 16 hours, it sucks. My advice is to start at 12 hours and build up to 16 hours. You will also have to plan your workouts differently. Plan to eat your first meal after your workout. This means that if you are not scheduled to eat until noon, workout at around 10:30-11 am that morning.

I understand this will not work for everyone, but you can adjust your fasting schedule to meet your needs as long as you follow a 16 hour fasting/8 hour feeding schedule.

Keep in mind that intermittent fasting is not calorie restriction.

All you are doing is moving your calories from breakfast and including them in your new eating schedule. Like with any diet, you still need to eat healthy. Stay away from the aisles in the grocery store and shop along the perimeter where the meats, fruits, vegetables, and eggs are located.

Once your body adjusts to the fasting schedule, it will be primed to become a fat burning machine as long as you follow the above suggestions.

High intensity exercise, like metabolic resistance training, combined with intermittent fasting is great 1-2 punch to turn your physique into something to be proud of.
