Lifestyle 4 Long-term Strategies to Increase Your Metabolism

Want to increase your metabolism and get healthy? Here are four strategies you can implement in your day-to-day life for long term benefits.

1. Eat protein-dense foods.

Protein has a high thermic effect on the body. What the heck does that mean? Basically the body has to expend a lot more energy to digest a source of protein than it does for other foods.
Why is this awesome? Your body will have to use energy from already stored fat cells to aid in the digestion of the protein. This basically means you can have your cake and eat it too… a protein cake.

2. Lift some weights.

Pick some heavy things up, then proceed to put them back down again. You don’t have to go full Arnie or attend the gym for 15 hours a day, but a couple of times a week is a good start. Lifting weights helps to increase your muscle mass. Muscles need energy to function. More muscles = more energy burnt = better metabolism = more fat loss = winning!

3. Get some sleep.

Your body needs time to recover. The body actually burns huge amounts of energy when we sleep. This is where all the repair happens. No sleep = no recover = no gains, and as we discussed earlier, more gains = more fat loss.

4. Mix up your environment.

Get outside, get uncomfortable. The body was designed to adapt to different weather types. If you are hot and sweating, excellent! You are burning more body fat trying to adapt. If you are cold and shivering, excellent! You are burning more body fat trying to adapt.

We spend too much time in our regulated temperatures keeping the body at perfect homeostasis, which means we burn less energy because we are perfectly comfortable.
Did this confuse you? Is it really that simple?

Short answer? Yes. Long answer? If you approach health and fitness with a long term sustainable goal that has you eating proper foods, exercising, sleeping well and getting some fresh air then you are definitely on the right track.
