ExerciseLifestyle The #1 Killer Of Consistency

consistency

The number one killer of consistency is perfectionism!

Do you know what the number one killer of consistency is?

Perfectionism.

So many of us struggle with perfectionism. Even Online Trainers like myself can get caught in the wheel of perfectionism- which does nothing but keep me stuck.

You see, I work with a lot of Moms with young kids. Many of the moms I coach online have athletic backgrounds in competitive sports like hockey and volleyball. They love being active, but a lot of times can feel like it’s very challenging to navigate their post-partum body, and just want to feel like themselves again. So, if that’s you reading this: well, I get it. I know how it can feel sometimes like you’re not doing anything right, like you have to be perfect at being a mom, wife, professional, and so on.

And when it comes to getting in shape, feeling strong and confident in your body, and just feeling like yourself again… it can be overwhelming trying to figure out where to start (especially when your body doesn’t feel the way it did before you had kids).

Sometimes it can feel like if you’re not doing the “perfect” program, then why bother at all? Sure, some programs are better than others, and there are a lot of great programs and great trainers here on Trainerize. And obviously due to my own bias I think our programs at BPM are really great.

But the truth is that virtually any workout program will work. What matters most is consistency, and in order to stay consistent you need to have patience.

Why do you need patience? Well because many of us have been conditioned by the fitness industry to think that results should only take 21 days- but the reality is that sustainable changes take time. Like…. a lot longer than you might think.

Like… a year. Maybe even two. Yeah, putting in effort day in and day out for that long. See why we need to be patient with the process?

And if you think that a year or two is long… Well, it is and it isn’t. At the time of writing this article- It’s almost been 2 years since the start of the pandemic. And while that feels like so long ago, it also kinda doesn’t.

Now, the process itself isn’t going to be perfect. Anything but. It’s going to get messy. There’s going to be ups and downs. There will be weeks when you’re flying high and 3-4 workouts will be a breeze, and there will be weeks where you’re dragging your feet in the dirt- struggling to just stay active.

That’s all part of the process. And this is why we say “Progress over Perfection”, because the reality is that if you can challenge yourself to be patient with the process, embrace the imperfection of it all, you will be much more likely to stay consistent.
